YOGA

Yoga is commonly viewed as nothing more than another form of physical exercise that has the potential to enhance physical well being, aid in weight loss or help one to achieve control over one’s own body by contorting it into various shapes. In India however, Yoga is more than just a program of physical exercises. It is regarded as a way of life and provides us with a philosophy that has the potential to aid us in attaining liberation from the material world and union of the self with the Supreme Being. This can be achieved through a course of physical and mental discipline which will enhance the quality of any practitioner’s life.

The benefits of yoga are manifold and in short it can be said that yoga enhances the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual wellbeing of the practitioner. The are many different types and styles of yoga and they each are distinguished by their individual postures, breath, slow and rhythmic movements, philosophy and a combination of many other factors. Although the basic asanas and breathing exercises remain the same, how they are done, in what order, and where attention is focused while doing them constitute the main differences among the many schools.

Regardless of your age or fitness level, you can find a style that will appeal to you and be most appropriate for your particular body or personality type. Yoga aims to expand the practitioner’s awareness during practice but also throughout the daily life. Practitioner should always keep this in their mind and be aware of their actions and the underlying motivations for their action.
